George Lakoff’s book provides a detailed account of Republican tactics to hi-jack and re-define central American values, like freedom itself. Lakoff argues that Republican rhetoric has created “framed” debates where even well-reasoned argumentation struggles. His discussion of this topic provides guidelines for how Democrats can work to reclaim their central values and reclaim America. Lakoff is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley.

Though many Democratic leaders opposed the final version of the legislation, they did not work forcefully to block its passage, largely out of fear that they would be criticized by President Bush and Republican leaders during the August recess as being soft on terrorism.”

Coming into 2008, we cannot let Republicans spin nuanced or complex perspectives as “soft” policy. The same will happen with immigration reform and healthcare. Democratic stances on immigration policies will be labeled as simply providing asylum to all and healthcare policy will be deemed socialist. Any process requiring more than two steps will be ridiculed. Some Republicans will work hard to make the Democrats appear “soft” on terror. We must work doubly hard to show how truly stupid this Administration has been on terror. And we must work to rid of these straw man arguments that Republicans have created.

Spurning Criticism, Rove Puts Blame on Democrats - New York Times

Rove interviewed at IHOP. Agrees that he was the invisible hand. Accuses Democrats of being responsible for partisan divides. Hmm.

While he might be vilified in the international community, he is apparently well-reputed in the International House of Pancakes.

Organizers will be going to parts of the country that haven’t been targeted by the party for decades. You can send them thanks and encouragement for their hard work here.

DNC Executive Director Tom McMahon said that this type of organizing can be lonely work. Your support will mean a lot.
